About the Author

Bruce L. Berg received his PhD from Syracuse University in 1983. His first faculty position as Assistant Professor was at Florida State University, where he also served as Internship Director. In 1986, he took a position at University of Massachusetts-Boston Harbor campus. Then from 1988 to 1996, he moved up the academic ladder at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, achieving tenure and full professor status. He served as chair of many doctoral dissertation committees and thus influenced generations of young scholars. In 1997, he moved to Southern California and took a faculty position at CSULB, where he remained until his death in 2009.

 

Howard Lune is an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Graduate Social Research Program at Hunter College, CUNY. He specializes in research on organizations and organizational fields, with a particular focus on nonprofit organizations. The majority of his research concerns the efforts by relatively marginal groups to organize for greater political, social and/or economic power. He has published studies of organizing in response to HIV/AIDS, the development of zero tolerance drug policies in the US, state-community relations in political policy domains, and adolescent violence in public schools.

He is presently working on a historical study of the development of the American Irish collective identity, from the founding the US to the end of the twentieth century.

Very good overview

One reviewer called this the most comprehensive guide to qualitative research - not quite - go to Michael Quinn Patton for that - but this is an excellent text to qualitative researchers who are beginning to fall in love with qualitative research. This text tells you why you are so smitten, helps you understand the origins and history of qualitative research and explains the connections with Sociology.

It is practical and readable and as a doctoral student and undergraduate instructor I see that it has pretty wide applicability. I have not seen the 8th edition with Lune's addition after Berg's death, but understand there is more info about coding and analysis that might have been missing from earlier editions.

A very practical guide and reference book for the main principles of qualitative study.
As an undergraduate who ended up taking a graduate-level course senior year in qualitative research design, this helped me understand more of the basics and better assimilate the courses advanced books and readings.

About the Author
Bandu N. Pamadi is a Senior Aerospace Engineer at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. He taught for about 15 years at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and at the Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Karnatak University, M.S. in aeronautical engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering (aerodynamics) from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He is an associate fellow of AIAA and a fellow of Aeronautical Society of India.

Great book! I use this book practically everyday. If you don't have a copy of the USAF Stability and Control DATCOM, this book is probably the next best thing. He presents the DATCOM techniques for estimating aircraft stability derivatives. One of the most used books in my library!

About the Author
Jim Kartalamakis was born in Salonica, Greece. He went to Toronto, Canada, to study electrical engineering, and at 23 bought his first Alfa, which was where it all started. Thirty years later, Jim still fondly remembers the life and times of the ARCC (Alfa Romeo Club of Canada). He returned to Greece in 1979, and ever since has had only one make of car, albeit different models – from a 1750 GT through to an Alfetta GTV, a 75 3.0 to, currently, another 75 3.0 and a 1.8 Turbo. For many years Jim was a technical writer for several car magazines, and the official Alfa Romeo technical manual translator in Greece.

A gearheads bible for Alfa's little twin-cammer

Is the material dated...most of it probably, but so is the subject. There is very little available for those of us who have this love-hate passion with old cars, especially if our object of affection is one of the many lovely and sometimes obscure models or makes from Europe. The Alfa four cylinder twin-cam engines comes from a time when the owner of a car could, if they felt like it, tune or modify the car without having to remap a silicone chip (I've looked all over my Weber's and I have not been able to find a serial or USB interface for my laptop). Today's designs are marvels of efficiency and reliability but for many of us whom like to get grease under our fingernails working on pre "HAL" controlled jewels like the Alfa inline TC fours and sixes, this book conveys a trove of information on what will work in our quest to squeeze the most performance from our lovely Italian mistresses (imho).

This is a wealth of info for the cars in question. Informative, well-written, the voise of experience speaks. While you will not agree with all the conclusions drawn, this update takes years off your learning curve. The author is congenial without being smarmy, and offers a book that needed to be written. Don't modify your Alfa without it...

I trust the author to write a Windows power user guide

I've known the author (Jason Savitt) for over a decade. I can always count on asking him a broad, generic question and getting a very detailed and targeted information as a response. He just has this unrelentless pursuit of making sure my question was answered, everything is clear and knowing that I could go on with my day a little bit smarter after I approached him with the question. Go get the book because I know it will have all the answers to your Power User questions. Or, go get the book because he’s a great guy!

Buy this digitally.

The book is a great help if you actually have the time to use it. Since my assignments were for my own good and not points it was easy to ignore and not use the book BUT the answers are in the back so it became a good study guide for exams simply by reading through the answers. Maybe if I had had it digitally then I could have done the pages on a "write on PDF" app or something.

Is this the best use of the book? No
Is this the best you are going to get when you are in nursing school? Probably.

The Schur complement plays an important role in matrix analysis, statistics, numerical analysis, and many other areas of mathematics and its applications. This book describes the Schur complement as a rich and basic tool in mathematical research and applications and discusses many significant results that illustrate its power and fertility. The eight chapters of the book cover themes and variations on the Schur complement, including its historical development, basic properties, eigenvalue and singular value inequalities, matrix inequalities in both finite and infinite dimensional settings, closure properties, and applications in statistics, probability, and numerical analysis. The chapters need not be read in order, and the reader should feel free to browse freely through topics of interest.

Although the book is primarily intended to serve as a research reference, it will also be useful for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. The contributing authors’ exposition makes most of the material accessible to readers with a sound foundation in linear algebra.

The book, edited by Fuzhen Zhang, was written by several distinguished mathematicians: T. Ando (Hokkaido University, Japan), C. Brezinski (Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille, France), R. Horn (University of Utah, Salt Lake City, U.S.A.), C. Johnson (College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, U.S.A.), J.-Z. Uneven exposition levels but very good overall

A comprehensive exposition of the title subject. The historical introduction (Chapter 0) is a gem. Chapters are written by different contributors, but with a few exceptions the overall organization is coherent. One minor problem is the disparity of notations for matrix algebra used by contributors. Main missing topic: applications in high performance computing. Exhaustive bibliography.
