Great Book

I have read many books on Flying Star and find this one a very good one. I admit I am slightly biased towards Lillian Too, but I really enjoy her writing style and find her short divisions of information easy to digest and remember. This is consistent in her Feng Shui series of books. This book is a lot easier to read than her other book on the subject, Lillian Too's Flying Star Feng Shui for the Master Practitioner: The Ultimate Guide to Advanced Practice Feng Shui: Stage II (Lillian Too's Feng Shui in Small Doses), also sold here. It is also much deeper than her pocket sized Flying Star Feng Shui for Period 8, which might a good place to start if you just want to know what Flyng Star is about.

I would really recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn this area of Feng Shui. It is important to understand that it assumes working knowledge of compass Feng Shui. I would recommend the following to anyone wanting to learn the fundamentals (highly recommended before learning with this book): 1. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Feng Shui 2. Great Flying Star Feng Shui Book from Lillian Too

Indeed I am a biased Feng Shui fan of internationally renowned prolific Feng Shui author, Harvard MBA, Lillian Too.

Flying Star Feng Shui as a topic is not beginner, "Dummies," or "Idiots" Feng Shui. Flying Star is an advanced or intermediate level of Feng Shui. You want to read a number of Ms. Too's "168 Feng Shui Ways to..." books first to receive your first wash of Feng Shui. In Feng Shui, you want to become first comfortable with what is known as "Mansion School" Feng Shui whether you actively practice it or not. It will help you to build your Feng Shui building blocks. The Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui: How to Apply the Secrets of Chinese Wisdom for Health, Wealth and Happiness
,Lillian Too's Feng Shui Essentials, Lillian Too's Basic Feng Shui: North American Edition.

Flying Star Feng Shui incorporates the dimension of TIME which makes it one layer more complicated.

The books continues Ms. Too's easy to digest graphical manner of presenting and teaching Feng Shui information in short digestible chucked tidbits, each of a page - a few pages. I find this so helpful for digesting, learning, and retaining Feng Shui information from Ms. Too.

There are some sections which the advanced beginner might find overwhelming on how to "cast" the "flying" pattern of the (Mountain and Water) Feng Shui "Stars." Don't worry and don't permit yourself to become bogged down there. The first time through of your reading it, allow the teaching of those patterns to wash over your brain. Maybe just scan it. You can practice that section more later. Ms. Too graciously includes it to teach you thoroughly about Flying Star Feng Shui. However, she does indeed remind us the readers that we can find the charts at her website. We don't have to become master level proficient at Flying Star movement patterns at the start.

The layout of the book is such that it is comprised of 162 "tips" some of which are shorter, some longer. Certainly the numbers and the importance of Mountain Stars and Water Stars are covered by Ms. Too. Additionally, she weaved in Symbolic Feng Shui as enhancements or to compensate for a Flying Star ailment within Feng Shui. A wonderful gift to your friends who love Feng Shui and who want to take it to the next level.

OVerall happy with this purchase.. there is a lot of information about flying star combinations, and Lillian too makes it easy to understand and explained questions which have been unanswered by a lot of other books I have bought. This is a must have!!!! Of course no book can cover everything.. but this book is about as close as it gets.

There, her gruff Germanic mother struggles to maintain the farm and care for Annemarie's father, who is stricken with ALS. Although Annemarie decides (disastrously) to manage the farm's business, her attention quickly turns to an old and ostensibly worthless horse with the same rare coloring as Harry. Her long-denied passion for riding reawakens as she tracks the horse's identity and eventually discovers it to be Harry's younger brother. She must heal both horse and herself as she struggles with her father's deterioration, Eve's rebellion and her attraction to both the farm's new trainer and her childhood sweetheart Dan. Impulsive and self-absorbed, Annemarie isn't always likable, but Gruen's portrait of the stoic elder Zimmers is beautifully nuanced, as is her evocation of Eve's adolescent troubles. Amid this realistically complex generational sandwich, the book's appealing horse scenes—depicted with unsentimental affection—help build a moving story of loss, survival and renewal.

Best new novelist I've read this year

Riding Lessons is so well crafted and written that it's astonishing to realize it's Gruen's first novel. The book is worth reading for the first breathless scene alone, but Gruen managed to keep me hooked throughout. I read it in two sittings (a girl's gotta eat), and it's now on my shelf of books that I look forward to reading again.
Annemarie's contemporary family issues ring painfully true, especially her relationship with her difficult mother and her rebellious daughter. But Gruen respects her reader and never resorts to typical solutions. Her father's illness is so poignantly rendered that I found myself biting my thumbnail as I read, aching for Annemarie. Gruen also manages a few deftly written comic scenes when Annemarie gets in over her head. The ending was perfect, no overwrought melodramatic scenes that first novelists can't seem to help, but a profound and moving, even elegant, wrap-up that left me fully satisfied.
I haven't been around horses very much, but the riding and stable scenes show that Gruen certainly has, and though the book appeals to everyone, horse people are going to absolutely love it. After a string of disappointing new novels on the shelves this year, Riding Lessons was a rare treat. Definitely looking forward to Gruen's next.

The accident, then three dominoes fall

Annemarie’s life through the first three chapters. Then she is left to cope for the next eighteen chapters with the consequences, the fallout, the bad decisions, the non-decisions, the foibles and fumbles of her mid-thirties years. Ride it out, Annemarie, and learn about Pappa, about Mutti, about Eva, about Dan, and eventually about yourself. Things the reader knew by the fifth chapter, Annemarie learns by the end. We learn to watch for the same symptoms in our own life-illnesses. Her “litany of disasters is like an Ohrwurm,” a tune you hear over and over again in your ear, an undying repetition of the same tune, perhaps in a different key in later chapters, but the theme rides up over itself repeatedly into our consciousness. We cannot believe that the woman, otherwise sentient and thoughtful, can remember so vividly and still be so forgetful. It stretched the suspension of my unbelief from time to time, but Annemarie is my Schatzlein, too. My eye, along with Mutti’s, turns away, but my heart never gave up on her. She reminds me too strongly of people I love, and even of myself at times. Fine writing, evocative, penetrating, and finally true.

Little girls and their horses

I am bothered by the first chapter where the horse, in organized competition, jumped over the fence and landed his full weight on his fetlock which shattered and sent his rider, a little girl, into a coma and body cast for months. I was glad that the girl didn't jump to her feet hollaring "That was fun! Let's do it again!" And so the story is committed to the question, what happens when she has a little girl of her own who grows up dreaming of a horse of her own? Just to narrow her choices she returns to her parents' horse-riding academy where her dad is dying and her mother never understood why she didn't saddle up at her earliest opportunity. I mean what for God's sake is wrong with this girl? And then, get a grip, she meets a horse identical to the one who died in chapter one. Spooky.

Divided into four parts, numerous experts expound upon what is strategy and how to use it to win in business:

It's hard for me to say where to start; The Portable MBA is a cornucopia of indispensable knowledge. Chapter 5, Strategy for the Small Business seems like a logical place to start. And, if you're looking for funding, pay close attention to Box 5.4 on p. 124 for key questions to ask yourself. Chapter 6 on Digital Strategy is also compelling in its own right. While much of the book applies to larger entities, it is wise to study the material for two reasons; 1) It will help you learn how to build your company and 2) Studying larger competitors is tantamount to military generals learning the ways of their adversaries.

(READ CHAPTER ONE--DO NOT JUST SKIP TO THE REVIEW QUESTIONS, IT WAS VERY HELPFUL!!!) The lessons are great, the tips are relevant, and there is plenty of material to prepare you for the exam. Instead of making flashcards, go to quizlet.com and search for online flash cards that have already been made by someone else. Their vocab section is VERY helpful, and the fact that other people have already made the entire list into online flashcards makes it even better. Buy this book!!

I took the GRE four days ago...here are my post-test Princeton Review thoughts

After a month and a half of studying with Kaplan GRE Exam 2010-2011 Premier with CD-ROM (Kaplan GRE Premier Program (W/CD)) and this Princeton Review book, I took the GRE over the weekend and can say that between the two I was extremely well-prepared. I began with Princeton and reviewed all the material in this book, including the practice tests, and then moved onto Kaplan, subsequently reviewing all the Kaplan material and using the online quizzes and tests as well. Here are my thoughts on the positives and negatives of the Princeton Review Cracking the GRE 2011 (with DVD) book compared to the Kaplan GRE Premiere 2011 book (with CD):

Positives:

- Analogies, Sentence Completion, and Antonyms: Princeton does a really great job of explaining how these sections work and then telling you exactly how to have the best chance of getting the answers correct. I used to abhor analogies...technically I kind of still do...but Princeton will tell you how to find the best solution when you know both stem words, when you only know one stem word, or when you don't even know either stem word. They teach you how to be an effective test taker no matter how well you know the material in the question, and they do it for all these three sections. For comparison, Kaplan kind of glosses over each of these sections, and does not even attempt to have the same level of helpfulness in preparing you for any situation you run into, as Princeton does.
- Practice questions: Princeton gives you generally 9 - 10 practice questions after each section you do, or sometimes up to 20. Answers are sometimes explained and sometimes not, unfortunately. Kaplan will give you generally 3 - 4 questions for each section, and again will sometimes explain them and sometimes not.
- Vocabulary: Princeton gives you "The Hit Parade," four lists of 75 words that are supposed to be GRE level and which are defined for you in the book with an extensive practice quiz/test at the end of each list. There are also two additional lists called "Beyond the Hit Parade" which are just more words. Kaplan's book has a couple sections in the back which give you similar GRE-style words all put into groups, which is helpful for learning synonyms, and then also goes over the roots of words, which is helpful if that's how you want to learn.
- Math: Princeton does a really great job of explaining everything you could possibly need to know about fundamental math concepts that would be on the test. The only thing I didn't see in Princeton that I did see in Kaplan was how to measure the distance between two points on an x, y graph. Other than that, the Princeton math section is well-organized and really well-explained, breaking down the math concepts to their most basic elements and then reinforcing them with examples and practice problems. The Kaplan book just doesn't do it as well and for some reason splits the math into different parts of the book.
- Readability: This is all preference. I found the Princeton book to be very casually written and very informal. It made it a little more enjoyable and easy to read because it made it more like a conversation, not so much like a lecture, while reading. The Kaplan book is more formal; not extremely formal and not to the point where it's difficult, but just much less casual.
- Practice tests: Princeton gives you four full-length CAT practice tests on their website. What distinguishes them from Kaplan is that you have the option to have your essays graded by Princeton staff for $5.99 for each test (that's two essays per test for $5.99 total) or for a slightly discounted price if you purchase grades on all four tests at once (Note: you DO NOT have to purchase grades if you don't want to...it is *optional*). This is very helpful, because the Princeton staff not only gives you your number score for each essay, but also gives you feedback and the strengths and weaknesses. Kaplan gives you the grading rubric, some examples to go by, and expects you to grade the paper yourself, which I think is pointless since you are probably not a qualified GRE essay grader. For what it's worth, I thought the Princeton CAT tests were more difficult than Kaplan, but I also did Princeton first, so I can't say for sure.

Negatives:
- Reading Comprehension: In my opinion Princeton drops the ball on Reading Comprehension. They do such a great job of explaining the other verbal sections, but I felt that Kaplan outdid them in this area. There's nothing necessarily wrong with the Princeton Reading Comp section, it's just that Kaplan does a better job of explaining their strategy and then gives you about a million examples to get it ingrained into you. Seriously, I was going through the Kaplan section going, "Jeez, ANOTHER passage? When is this section going to end?!" Kaplan basically does for Reading Comp what Princeton does for Analogies, Sentence Completion, and Antonyms.
- Practice sets: Princeton has additional practice sets at the back of their book. I don't think these are very good. They're nice, they're helpful, they're good practice...it's just that Princeton separates questions into completely separate easy, medium, and hard sections. That's great if you want to practice your skills over time, but it's just not an accurate representation of what the test will be like. To be fair, neither is Kaplan, but Kaplan is a bit closer because they just lump everything into one section so you are alternating between difficulties, which is slightly more true to the test, which changes difficulty depending on your performance.
- Online practice material: Princeton just doesn't cut it with the online practice material. Besides the fact that it took me like an hour to figure out how to even get to the practice material on their website (easy now...click on "Student Tools" in the top right...it's just not clear that that's where the practice stuff is as you're perusing their website), they just don't have the same amount to offer as Kaplan. Kaplan will overload you with practice material, and they really mop the floor with Princeton in that regard. Princeton may be infinitely better for your essays, but Kaplan will really give you a workout with the amount of practice options they give you.
- Practice tests: Not a big deal at all, but the Princeton practice tests have a visually glossed up look. Kaplan's tests look exactly like the real test. Princeton's have their own look. Worth pointing out if you're going to practice only by Princeton so it doesn't throw you off. Same basic concept, just noticeably different look in the real test.
- Essays: Not the essay grading, which again is great...but teaching you how to write the essays. I think Kaplan is a bit better. Princeton pushes too hard on this mediocre format in which they tell you to start your issue essay with "Many people believe that ______. However, I believe ______" etc. over and over. It's boring and it sucks. They hint at making it fancier, but don't really give you much help to do so. They also emphasize that you should always oppose the issue presented because if you agree you won't have as interesting of an essay. They say you should make up your mind right away on your exact stance and then begin coming up with examples and narrowing it down to your top three before writing your essay; Kaplan tells you to write examples for both yes and no positions and then to decide based on your examples which is a stronger stance to take. I prefer the Kaplan method of actually choosing if you agree or not, and it helped big time on my actual GRE issue essay. Had I gone with Princeton and attempted to disagree I would have had a really awful essay.

Overall I hesitate to recommend one book over the other. While I feel that Princeton Review does nearly everything better than Kaplan as far as the book material goes, except for Reading Comprehension, Kaplan blows Princeton out of the water with the availability of online practice material. Kaplan seriously goes above and beyond with the amount of practice they'll give you on their website, and they ought to be highly commended for that. Ultimately I think that having both books was really the best course of action, as Princeton will truly help you learn the material and how to do the questions, and Kaplan will help you to practice it. I also went through the Kaplan GRE Exam Vocabulary in a Box in its entirety, studying the last few unknown words right up to my last few minutes at the stoplight on the way to the testing center. Several of the words did come up on the test, and I think it was very helpful to go through and learn the vocab, even words that didn't come up.

Bottom line: if you are going to get this Princeton Review book, I highly recommend you supplement it with the Kaplan book, which really gives you a heap full of practice quizzes and tests. If you rely on the Princeton book on its own you'll be in totally fine shape because they teach it so well and do have a lot of practice material...it's just that you may feel like you aren't getting enough practice, which is where Kaplan really exceeds and why I recommend having both books. I highly recommend the dual combo, and maybe even that vocab box as well. As I said, with the combination of all three, I did extremely well on the test a few days ago. If you need to choose one, choose this one. It teaches you the material REALLY WELL and still has a good bit of practice. Kaplan is mainly useful as more practice; you won't learn the material as well from it.

*Please note that after August 1st, 2011 the GRE test will be changing. These books will probably still be somewhat relevant, but certain questions will be exiting and other new ones will be coming in.

Decent for Theory, Bad Examples and Proofreading

This book is decent for the theory on taking the test by including what shortcuts exists and how to whittle down choices. With its practice questions however the book is disappointing. I have done three sections of math so far and each one has a problem where the question and the answer key list different values. Some are simple enough to work around once you see them explained in the key (i.e.3x4=14) but when trying to (re)learn this math not being able to trust the book or wasting time on problems that are impossible to solve because of typos is not fun.

The book also has numerous spelling typos which while they don't detract from the content, they will make you more hesitant to trust this book as much as you would like.

In this book Mark Harrison rebuilds and analyses the Soviet economy's wartime statistical record, examining its prewar size and composition, and wartime changes in GNP, employment, the defence burden, and the role of foreign aid. Complementing classic long-run growth studies, the book compares the Soviet experience with that of other great powers. It emphasises the severity of current costs and capital losses arising from the war, which had a negative effect on GNP that persisted well after 1945. The results are based on a comprehensive analysis of hitherto closed official documents, throwing new light on the dimensions of the Soviet war effort, the comparative economics of the war, and its long-term impact on the Soviet economy.

About the Author
Mark Harrison writes about the history and economics of Russia, conflict, defence and security. He is a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham and of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University.

Dry and technical essential reading

This book is extremely dry and technical, and a background in economics and even mathematical concepts applied to economics is definitely recommended.
It is very much a book about macroeconomical aspects of the war: how it was financed, what did the decisions regarding manpower and other resource distribution issues imply, and so on. The wealth of information regarding these aspects of the Soviet war economy make it worthwhile for anybody interested in wartime economics, despite the heavy reading.
