Disrupt Yourself: Putting the Power of Disruptive Innovation to Work, by Whitney L. Johnson

Thinkers50 Management Thinker of 2015 Whitney Johnson wants you to consider this simple, yet powerful, idea: disruptive companies and ideas upend markets by doing something truly different--they see a need, an empty space waiting to be filled, and they dare to create something for which a market may not yet exist.  As president and cofounder of Rose Park Advisors' Disruptive Innovation Fund with Clayton Christensen, Johnson used the theory of disruptive innovation to invest in publicly traded stocks and private early-stage companies. In Disrupt Yourself, she helps you understand how the frameworks of disruptive innovation can apply to your particular path, whether you are:  a self-starter ready to make a disruptive pivot in your business a high-potential individual charting your career trajectory a manager looking to instill innovative thinking amongst your team a leader facing industry changes that make for an uncertain future  We are living in an era of accelerating disruption; no one is immune. Johnson makes the compelling case that managing the S-curve waves of learning and mastery is a requisite skill for the future. If you want to be successful in unexpected ways, follow your own disruptive path. Dare to innovate. Do something astonishing. Disrupt yourself.

Jumping the S-Curve: How to Avoid Being Disrupted by the Forces of Disruption
By Thomas M. Loarie
“Disrupt Yourself” is the best book on career transition and development to come along in a number of years. In it author Whitney Johnson takes a page out of mentor Clayton Christensen’s “disruption” playbook to provide structure on career disruption…not how to avoid being disrupted by forces of disruption but how to leverage disruption and change one’s trajectory to increase meaning and happiness.

The “S-Curve”, more commonly called the “life cycle” has been used for years to show how some companies, products, technologies, and start-ups blossom while others wither. Johnson in “Disrupting Yourself” now adapts this to career planning.

Playing it safe is not safe in today’s fast-paced world. While some think it is smarter to “stick to the knitting”, Johnson shows why it is safer to jump to a “new S-Curve” where opportunity, steep learning, innovation, and personal growth fuel personal productivity and happiness. Shifting successfully to a new learning curve demands managing these seven variables:
• taking the right risks
• playing to one’s distinctive strengths
• embracing constraint
• battling entitlements
• stepping back to grow
• giving failure it’s due
• and being discovery driven

Johnson devotes a chapter to each.

The really big idea of this book centers on the ability to distinguish between competitive risk and market risk. Pursuing a career where there is plenty of supply (and competition) is to take market risk. We need to first assess how crowded the market is, and then what is needed to compete successfully. All who have hired have the normal distribution of resumes received for a specific job. The bulk of the resumes are indistinguishable. Competition is tough.

Another and better approach is to go where no one else is going and to position you to play where no one else is playing. Chances are that very few people will be able to offer what you can. This is at the core of disrupting yourself.

The decision to jump to a new curve requires guts and perseverance (staying power) but as Johnson notes, those that do also are rewarded with expanded horizons, increased productivity, improved emotional and physical well-being and high-velocity growth when the inflection point is reached. “Nature favors risk-takers.”

Risk mitigation is helped by discerning our unique strengths. Johnson supplements Rath’s “Strengths-Finders 2.0,” which I recommend, with great questions to provide additional insights:
• What skills have helped you survive?
• What makes you feel strong?
• When do you feel invigorated, inquisitive, successful?
• What exasperates you about others?
• What made you different, even an oddball, as a child?
• What compliments do you shrug off?
• What are your hard-one skills?

I have been co-leading a ministry for executives, managers, and professionals’ in-transition since 2002. We have served over 6000 people regardless of faith tradition and presently have 1300 participants. I recently presented “Disrupting Yourself” as a new concept to consider in personal career development. This produced an “ah-ha” moment for all participants.

Johnson has provided structure and guidelines for how to find a new path. Disrupting yourself is critical to avoiding stagnation and to fast-tracking your personal and career growth. It will “force you up steep foothills of new information, relationships, and systems.” Progress will be exponential.

A fantastic, timely guide to personal growth during the era of digital disruption
By Dave Birckhead
There has never been a more interesting, exciting time to work in technology-fueled business transformation. The turbo-charged pace of change unlocks tremendous new opportunities. It seems like every day brings a new startup, a new technology, a new way of working, a new innovation. Many industries—from financial services to publishing—face massive shifts in their businesses, increased competition, and significant changes in customer behavior and expectations. The scale and pace of the change is without precedent. Much has been written about this digital disruption and the business strategies and tactics to address it. But, what of the associated human dimension and sometimes the human cost?

Whitney Johnson’s new book, Disrupt Yourself, couldn’t be better timed to address this urgent question. For so many of us, the pace of change can seem simultaneously exhilarating and overwhelming. In response, Whitney lends her wise, insightful voice to illustrate how disruptive innovation frameworks can be applied to our own particular lives and careers. Thriving during this time of change also means pushing ourselves out of comfort zones and accelerating lifelong learning.

Among the ideas and advice Whitney shares in the book, two in particular resonated with me the most:

Resist entitlement. As we grow in our careers and accumulate achievements, many of us develop a sense that we are entitled to success and associated rewards. After years of effort, the school we attended, the degree we earned, the certifications we achieved, the promotions gained, the titles and raises awarded can accumulate to give us the sense that we deserve something more from life. And, that actually works against our learning and development. Due to the scale and pace of change, those who succeed in the digital and social era will be those who make ongoing learning a priority, and resisting any sense of entitlement--staying humble and grateful--supports that quest.

Disrupt yourself before disrupting others. For those leading innovation and change efforts in established companies, starting new businesses, or consulting to help firms with digital transformation, Whitney reminds us that change begins with each of us, at a personal level. Similar to “the buck stops here,” we now must think in terms of “the change starts here.” We must first change ourselves in order to help others and our organizations change. Whitney writes:
“Most of us are brimming with the confidence, even competence, to change the world. It is vital that we are also equipped with the humility to understand that changing the world and keeping innovation alive require that we change ourselves.”

I had the opportunity to read Disrupt Yourself over a fall weekend at the beach, a perfect time and place for reading and reflection. As with so much of Whitney’s writing and good advice over the years, this book challenged my thinking and reminded me of what’s really important as I pursue my own journey of personal disruption. I will be recommending Disrupt Yourself to friends, colleagues and clients.

Inspiring, motivating, real world guidelines. This isn't just for the C-suite.
By S. Elkins
Inspiring - and with clear ideas and direction for forward movement. I rarely read self-help style books; knowing it was written by Whitney Johnson automatically made this different. This is not a typical book about changing your attitude to improve your life. This has real stories of real people who... FAILED. And came back from failure to succeed in many ways. Not only does it have real world, real people examples, Whitney offers clear direction about what makes us fear failure and how to move beyond that fear. I read this book in two evenings and made notes for my next disruption. I can't wait to share it with other people who need just that nudge to action. She's a master.

By Tim Uhler
This is a must have book for roof framing. The drawings and principles are layed out very well and as cleanly as you can for a book like this. It covers just about every roof framing situation you will likely encounter, and the principles and techniques will help you solve the ones that aren't covered.

If you are serious about learning to cut and stack roofs, then buy this book. Or if you are like me, buy a few and give them to your framers.

Secrets of Voodoo, by Milo Rigaud

Secrets of Voodoo traces the development of this complex religion (in Haiti and the Americas) from its sources in the brilliant civilizations of ancient Africa. This book presents a straightforward account of the gods or loas and their function, the symbols and signs, rituals, the ceremonial calendar of Voodoo, and the procedures for performing magical rites are given.

“Voodoo,” derived from words meaning “introspection” and “mystery,” is a system of belief about the formation of the world and human destiny with clear correspondences in other world religions. Rigaud makes these connections and discloses the esoteric meaning underlying Voodoo’s outward manifestations, which are often misinterpreted. Translated from the French by Robert B. Cross. Drawings and photographs by Odette Mennesson-Rigaud.

Milo Rigaud was born in Port au Prince, Haiti, in 1903, where he spent the greater part of his life studying the Voodoo tradition. In Haiti he studied law, and in France ethnology, psychology, and theology. The involvement of Voodoo in the political struggle of Haitian blacks for independence was one of his main concerns.

Just a college essay on Voodoo
By Creole Guy
The author is writing for a Euro audience and has taken GREAT creative writing liberties in trying to tie in Voodoo with Moses and ancient Ethiopia or Cush.
This book isn't meant for anyone who is from this heritage and culture.
Some of the things that this author says is just flat out made up and fantasy.
He knows nothing about Louisiana Creole tradition or African American tradition and can't write on it but he has studied some Jewish Kabbalah and mixes voodoo up with other mystical practices in an attempt to root Voodoo in some biblical text-which simply isn't true.

The new "blue book"
By Ms AMber
Anybody who is a Pagan who knows about Raymond Buckland's Blue Book. Well, Milo Rigauld has his own blue book and it is a MUST for people interested in Voudoun minus the tv/movie hype!

Milo Rigauld cites the Holy Trinity of Voudoun, has many black and white photographs and thoroughly discusses the basics of Haitian Voudoun. You won't go wrong in reading this treasure.

This is probably one of the better overviews of Voodoo
By El Brujo
This was probably my first book on Voodoo that I purchased, and it still has to be one of my reference guides to the religious beliefs. While other books dwell on magic, curses, and the curio folk magic of Hoodoo, this book gives you a collection of beautifully drawn Veves, excellent black and white photos, and a whole collection of traditional Voodoo prayers and chants. Their is a section on classifying the various Lwas, or Loas, from the various Voodoo Mysteries, such as the Radas, Congos, Petros, Ibu, Nago, and the Dantor mysteries.
This book is not for the beginners and it does not candy coat Voodoo, it gives you a ruff down of what Voodoo's practices, rites, passages, magic, and sacrifices are all about. This book is an overview of the religion, as it is impossible for a Mystery of such vast Knowledge, beauty and Wisdom to be justly explained in 217 or so pages. It is not meant for all, but for those who truly respects and want to honor the Lwas, this is a good start. Although an ordained Houngan or Mambo would be your best bet.

A true timeless classic!
By A Customer
My father first began reading to me from this book when I was just a wee lad. The stories of honor, courage and chivalry, as well as the "forsooth" writing style en-thralled me in the magical mystery surrounding Arthur and his knights. I believe that the stories read to me as a child went on to shape me into the person I am today. I encourage all parents to by this book as bedtime reading for their children. Turn down the lights, and let the past come alive! A wonderfully romantic tale for the young at heart as well!

Ilustrations by the father of an American painting dynasty
By A Customer
It's a pleasure to see the work of the patriach of an American painters family, N. C. Wyeth. This juvenile version of the Arthur myth is a good and classic introduction into Celtic lore later transformed into chivalry, knights, castles, and mystery. The art makes it worth reading and enjoying by an older audience. Bill Rowe

Tales of the Peculiar, by Ransom Riggs

A companion to the New York Times bestselling Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, now a major motion picture directed by Tim Burton.

Before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales.

Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—the collection of fairy tales known to hide information about the peculiar world, including clues to the locations of time loops—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his #1 bestselling Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.

Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories in this deluxe volume of Tales of the Peculiar, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar. Featuring stunning illustrations from world-renowned woodcut artist Andrew Davidson this compelling and truly peculiar anthology is the perfect gift for not only fans, but for all booklovers.

A perfect gift, reminiscent of classic bookmaking, this beautifully packaged volume features full-page woodcut illustrations, gold foil stamping, a ribbon, and removable back sticker.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up—Riggs gives fans of his "Miss Peregrine" trilogy a history lesson of sorts in 10 short stories that provide a glimpse into the fascinating past of peculiars and Peculiardom. These fables seem familiar yet completely new, touching on themes and subjects that populate classic myths and legends. For example, the famous phrase no man is an island, entire of itself takes on a completely different meaning for one peculiar. The tales are presented as written records of known stories passed down from generation to generation, collected and presented by Millard Nullings, Esq., EdD, MBCh (one of Miss Peregrine's children from the original books), with footnotes that fill in historical details. The pieces predate the use of photography, so instead of employing the intriguing and mysterious found photographs featured in past works, Riggs relies on beautifully detailed illustrations that capture another time and place. The stories center on characters who are different, who don't fit in, who aren't accepted by those around them, and who overcome these challenges and come to embrace who they truly are. VERDICT For fans of the past books, this volume will provide new insight into many of the events in Peculiar history. It is also a perfect gateway for new readers to enter the world Riggs has created. Recommended for all libraries.—Billy Parrott, New York Public Library

Another Classic from Ransom Riggs ...
By delicateflower152
Once again, Ransom Riggs gives readers a unique, beautifully written book that is sure to become a modern classic. "Authored" by Millard Nullings, a former resident of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, ten fable-like tales comprise his “Tales of the Peculiar”. Each one highlights a lesson of moral or ethical nature; each one features a “Peculiar”.

“The Splendid Cannibals” cautions against envy and greed; it may be the most violent of the tales. “The Fork-Tongued Princess” tells of the danger in valuing physical beauty above all else and of the freedom that forgiveness affords. “The First Ymbryne” is the story of how Ymbrynes came to be; it should have been the first entry in “Tales of the Peculiar”. “The Woman Who Befriended Ghosts” is a story of seeking friendship and kindred spirits. “Colobolo” reminds readers to accept their innate nature rather than attempting to alter it to conform to society. “The Pigeons of Saint Paul’s” is a story showing that having a stake in something makes a difference to the affected individuals. “The Girl Who Could Tame Nightmares” tells of good intentions producing disastrous results and of using that lesson to benefit others. “The Locust” points out how vital a parent’s unconditional love is in the life of their child. In “The Boy Who Could Hold Back the Sea”, a boy who was tricked into using his “Peculiar” powers for unlawful, nefarious purposes begins to understand that his well-intentioned attempt to help may also have harmful results. “The Tale of Cuthbert” is a story of life-long friendship and loyalty.

Characters are relatable and very "human". Their hopes, fears, and dreams are those we all hold. Their situations and personalities draw the reader into the story and create, in the reader, a feeling of empathy.

Andrew Davidson’s illustrations resemble woodcut engravings like those of Albrecht Durer. Each story is introduced by one full-page drawing; there are no illustrations within a story. The illustrations enhance the reader’s impression that “Tales of the Peculiar” is a book of vintage fables.

The construction of “Tales of the Peculiar” is an important factor influencing the reader’s perception of the book. The gold-and-white design of the end papers, the ribbon marker, and the wheat-colored page numbers and footnotes strengthen the vintage feel. Two factors detracted from the physical presentation of “Tales of the Peculiar”. Instead of a dust jacket, a slick white paper containing information usually included in a dust jacket was glued to the back cover. Further, the wheat-colored ink used for the footnotes made them difficult to read.

Ransom Riggs is one of my favorite authors; his writing is interesting, unusual, and very literate; the "Peculiars" are unique and quirky. “Tales of the Peculiar” was a joy to read. It will take its place in my library beside the “Peculiar Children” volumes.

By E.Robyn
First of all, this book is absolutely stunning- the cover, the spine, the endpapers, the full page illustrations as well as the smaller ones, the fonts used- I loved everything! The attached ribbon bookmark was also a lovely touch.

Second, this collection was absolutely everything I was hoping for. It was like an Aesop's Fairy Tales collection for Peculiars. I loved every single one of the stories! I wish there were more!!

Third, I loved the illustrations from Andrew Davidson. Each one was wonderfully done and very fitting for the story they preceded.

Fourth, just the detail that was put into this book was perfect. I loved that it was "put together" and annotated by Millard Nullings. I thought that his forward was very Lemony Snicket-esque (which I loved). And I really enjoyed the first edition notice!

I would highly recommend this book for any Miss Peregrine fan.

It's most peculiar
By EA Solinas
One way you can tell that you're reading a good fantasy series is that there's a whole world of other stories outside the main one.

Such is the case of "Tales of the Peculiar," which expands the world of "peculiar people" featured in the Miss Peregrine's Children series. Rather than a true sequel or prequel, Ransom Riggs spins up long-ago-and-far-away tales of peculiars throughout history, which feel a bit like lost fables or fairy tales. Except way, way, way more twisted, amusing and sometimes gruesome.

Among the peculiars examined in the book are:
*A village of peculiars with a very specific ability, who are visited by a wealthy band of law-abiding cannibals, who have a very odd proposition for them.
*A princess who finds that her serpentine peculiarity makes it hard for her to get a husband. Will her father's cruelty and a lack of a prince ruin her life, or will she be able to forge a new one on her own terms?
*The tale of the first ymbryne, a young goshawk with the odd tendency to turn into a human. As she tries to find a place in the human world, she discovers the peculiars -- and the powers she can use to protect them.
*A girl who pulls threadlike nightmares out of people's ears, only to discover that nightmares never actually go away.... and they can get mean.
*Zheng tries to distance himself from the legacy of his sea-mad father, until suddenly grass grows on his feet, seaweed from his armpits, and he starts sweating sand. And what he learns of his father's fate is stranger than he could imagine.
*And stories of birds in a cathedral, a woman who speaks to ghosts, a young boy with a heart too large for his body, a young man who can control the currents of the sea, and a fairy tale of "once upon a peculiar time" where a giant is cursed by a witch.

"Tales of the Peculiar" is the kind of book that one can imagine Miss Peregrine having on her bookshelf. It's mostly stories of a fairy-tale-ish nature where a peculiar runs across some kind of disastrous scenario -- sometimes it's intolerant normal humans, or other peculiars, or just their own nature -- and eventually discovers their own special place in the world.

And with that style of storytelling, Riggs also writes the various short stories in a different style as well. Most of the stories are introduced with some variant of "Once..." or "There was...", and presented in a more distant way, especially since the tales are occasionally interrupted by an editor's note. But he includes plenty of striking emotional scenes and dialogue ("she was gripped by a sudden wild happiness").

The peculiarities are so varied and sometimes bizarre, ranging from X-Man-esque superpowers to involuntary cannibalism to changing into inhuman forms, that the story possibilities are almost limitless. And in the long-ago-and-far-away settings (medieval kingdoms, Irish villages, enchanted forests, imperial China, the American frontier), Riggs also incorporates an unapologetically macabre aesthetic. I mean, the first story in the collection involves wealthy cannibals, and other stories include amputation, nightmare-monsters, venom-spitting and a guy turning into a giant weeping slug.

"Tales of the Peculiar" is a pleasant accompaniment to the Miss Peregrine series -- and though rather different in style, the imaginative stories of peculiar people are pretty entertaining.

The Hurt Patrol (The Rusty Winters Series), by Mary Mckinley

Give me your nerds, your freaks, your huddled outcasts yearning to breathe free. Stick them in Boy Scout uniforms and you’ll have the Hurt Patrol—a sorry bunch of teen rejects who will never make Eagle.

Welcome to the club

Beau has been scouting since first grade. Not because he loves it, but because his dad does. It’s the only thing they’ve ever bonded over, what with Beau’s dad being into sports, beer, and brawling. So when they move to yet another Midwest town, Beau expects the usual Boy Scout experience, filled with horribleness and insults. Instead he finds something else entirely. Kicked out of every other patrol, their little band of brothers is equal parts nuts and awesome. For the first time, people are watching Beau’s back instead of throwing things at it. Nice. Novel. And also necessary, when you’re dealing with parents splitting up, crushes, first love, and coming out.

The first—and only—rule of Hurt Patrol: We are never going to win—but if you’re outcast elsewhere, you’ll do just fine here.

Straightforward But with Poor Character Voices
By Shelumiel
*Actual rating: 2.5 out 5 stars.*

Once in a while, we stumble upon books that affect us so deeply we feel forever changed after closing the last pages. Then there are those that we abhor so much it's not funny. But every so often we come across ones that we feel indifferent to. Stories we don't have strong opinions for, for better or worse. The Hurt Patrol is such one cookie.

One thing I like about this novel is how it depicts bullying as something that is not cool and that you can actually take actions to alleviate, if not wholly prevent, the blows. Sadly, however, that's it. I had hopes for this book. The synopsis got me—the underdog trope—but I didn't feel any connection with the characters. And that may have something to do with the length of the book, because it's quite a short read, which didn't leave much room for characterization. I mean, I know I'm supposed to sympathize with them. But it didn't really come. Beau with his deprecating father and terrible coming-out episode. I wanted to be touched by his story, but all the time there's an air of detachment I cannot quite shake off. Even the family story arc. I love family drama as much as the next person, but here the parents are one-dimensional, especially Beau's father. The narrator, Rusty, is humdrum. And up until the end, Rusty's motives for running away weren't explained. (But maybe it's because Beau's story was the point; I don't know.)

There are neat lines every now and then, which is helpful. But it bums me out when I feel apathetic about a book and that's the case with The Hurt Patrol, so much so that when a scoutmaster was talking deep talks, it fell flat. I appreciate what the author's getting at, I really do, but I wasn't invested in the characters enough to be fully hit by the emotional impact.

I'm antsy writing negative reviews (this counts as negative, right? Right), as I would rather prefer sharing things that I love. But here it is. The Hurt Patrol is a straightforward story that has cardboard characters. As with all my other reviews, this is highly subjective. You might enjoy stuff I do not and vice versa.

So many of the questions I had when reading THE HURT PATROL where answered when I realized it was a companion novella to a book I hadn't read, set during that book. I honestly don't know how I manage to select this book for review without knowing that fact, but manage I did.

Even knowing that, I think some aspects could be improved. The meat of THE HURT PATROL is layered between two frames. The outermost layer is that Rusty is writing this down as an essay for her teacher. The next layer is that Beau is telling Rusty this story in the car, on their way to Forks, Washington (AKA Twilight town). Both of these layers add little to the story. It neither comes across like someone writing an essay nor someone speaking about their experiences. I assume Mary McKinley was trying to make it sound like BEAU, LEE, THE BOMB, & ME. Given that this is a companion novella, however, I think she could've cut to the chase and just put it in Beau's point of view.

THE HURT PATROL is essentially one long, somewhat meandering flashback. It covers Beau's past during his parents' divorce, figuring out that he's gay, losing his best friends, coming to find confidence in himself with the worst Boy Scout ever, and getting gay bashed. It's certainly an ambitious novella. Unfortunately, I can see why it didn't make the main book. Beau's story is a touch shapeless, particularly when shoved into the frame of a road trip that goes nowhere because it happens in another book.

There are glimmers of greatness. Beau's dad is a piece of work, admonishing his son not to be a sissy and otherwise berating him and his mother. Yet, Beau still sides with him in a pivotal fight, unable to keep himself from seeking his father's approval and love. It's an excellent glimpse of how complicated families can be, and how children can still unconditionally love parents who don't deserve it.

I think fans of BEAU, LEE, THE BOMB, & ME will probably enjoy THE HURT PATROL, especially if Beau is their favorite character and they want to know more about him. It was a bit hard for me to get into without that knowledge, since it's mostly a character sketch. It wasn't terrible, but I just kept feeling as I was reading that I was missing something big, something that would explain how this story was structured. And I guess I was.

Smiled through my tears...

Sad and funny and full of biting wit; when I got it I didn't understand it was a prequel to her debut novel, Beau, Lee, The Bomb & Me, but once that was clear I found it a wonderful read. Beau's unstated sadness at how he and his father's relationship devolved sounds notes that are truthful and heartbreaking. I have ordered her sequel Rusty Summer and look forward to reviewing that soon, as well.
