Variety of Opinions

This is a challenging read. There are several authors lending their insights into specific movies that Hitch made throughout his career. Deutelbaum & Paogue tie them together well. If you are looking for a book more about the filmmaker himself, then try Patrick McGilligan's book, "Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light." It is an exhaustive book, but an easier read. And, it covers the same films. The articles in D&P are more analytical of each movie. This book does not cover every movie Hitch made, but does include the more popular ones.

An Average book for the Average GMAT Test-Taker...not for students trying to score 650-plus.

I am a Harvard grad (class of 02'), professional GMAT tutor and 99% GMAT scorer. I know this complex, intricate test inside-out, but at the same time, I'm always learning, which is why it continues to fascinate me.

As I expected when I ordered it, this book is just OK; I would recommend it for basic strategies and low/average GMAT scorers only. Unfortunately, the shiny gold writing on the cover is the most impressive thing about it. Any attempt to write an "all in one" guide to a test as complex as the GMAT is destined to be at least a partial failure, and this new 2017 edition is proof positive that simpler does not always mean better.

There is some good news: I can confirm that I was able to register with Princeton Review and access the online content, which includes 6 practice CATs. However, there are thousands of official GMAT questions,1,500 of which are free via the GMAT Prep software, so I don't see the need for any GMAT student to practice on non-authentic questions. The Official GMAT guides are lacking in strategy, however, and this is where other books such as this one will come into play. Unfortunately, much of this book is filled with basic facts and formulas, rather than GMAT strategies, which is why I can more strongly recommend the books from the Manhattan GMAT Series, as well as the PowerScore Critical Reading Bible and Critical Reasoning Bible.

Basically, Princeton Review (full disclosure: my former employer) and Kaplan are the Burger King and McDonald's of the test-prep world. You might leave feeling full of knowledge, but it's mostly empty calories.

Any GMAT self-studier can tell you that there is no one book that can prepare you for the GMAT. Yes, you should start with the Official Guides, because you should stick to official questions whenever possible, but for those of us who are self-studying, no one book is enough.

Why are the 2017 Official Guides the very best place to start your GMAT preparation, other than the free GMATPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GMAT, because the book is written by the test-maker and uses actual, retired GMAT questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.

Pro tip: You can take each of the 6 GMAT Prep CATs more than once, because the GMAT is an adaptive test (it adjusts the difficulty level of later questions based on your previous responses). There are about 4 to 16 times as many questions in the GMAC's question pool as there are in any given test, which means that every test you take will be different. Tests 1 and 2 draw from a (gigantic!) pool of about 1,500 questions, and tests 3, 4, 5, and 6 draw from a more modest pool of about 400 questions each. To re-take your GMAT Prep tests, click "reset" in the lower-left hand corner of the GMAT Prep software window, but make sure to take screenshots of your previous test sessions beforehand--frequent screenshots are a good idea anyway because the software is prone to crashing and losing your data. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.

For those of you who are just getting started, here is the overall structure of the GMAT:

1) Analysis of an Argument Essay (AWA or Analytical Writing Assessment): 30 minutes, 1 question.
2) Integrated Reasoning (Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two Part Analysis): 30 minutes, 12 questions. Please note: unlike the Verbal and Quantitative sections, the IR section is not adaptive.
3) Optional 8-minute break
4) Quantitative Section (Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency): 75 minutes, 37 questions (2 minutes per question)
5) Optional 8-minute break
6) Verbal Section (Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction): 75 minutes, 41 questions (1.8 minutes per question)

Keep in mind that on the GMAT you cannot go back or skip any questions, and that the first 12-15 questions of the Verbal and Quantitative sections have the most impact on your score due to the adaptive scoring algorithm. A correct answer will yield a slightly harder question in most cases, and vice versa, and the GMAT will gradually determine your score as you go. The largest adjustments are made at the beginning of the test, which is why the first 1/3 of questions are so essential. Also, approximately 10 to 25% of the questions on the actual GMAT are experimental—you don’t know which ones they are, and they don’t count toward your score.

Great accompaniment to basic instruction

I am using the Greatest Hits book to round out the lessons in Alfred's Adult All-in-One Course. The latter suffers a little from not having enough full-length scores to really practice the material. One or two verse ditties only go so far and everyone else in the house gets tired of Jingle Bells or The Saints Go Marching In much much sooner than the piano student him/herself.

Even though the book claims that students are ready at page 44 of All-In-One to attempt the scores in Greatest Hits, I have my doubts. The opening song is very challenging and I still am nowhere close to mastering it. It is only when I got to around page 72 of the teaching material that I felt comfortable returning to Greatest Hits and trying some of the other arrangements. In particular, My Heart Will Go On is a very satisfying piece; it never really leaves middle C and the basic beat is familiar to most people.

I highly recommend this as an accompaniment to the All-In-One course. I subtracted one star as I think it could have included at least one more easy arrangement at the start of the text. After all, students buy these supplementals to practice, and encouragement - especially for those teacing themselves - is crucial.

Note that the book does not include a CD; even though most of the pieces are well known, it still would have been a nice touch.

Harder than Expected

I am using the Adult All-In-One piano course book (which is great, by the way) to learn piano. I bought this book when I reached the point in the course book telling me I was "ready" to play more songs. Wow, this book is much harder than expected. Although the course book tells you which pages you're ready to play, you haven't really reached this ability. It's taken me a while but I finally learned the first song! I wish a CD was available as many of these songs I don't know (yes, the song can be searched online to figure out the basic beat, but a CD would be more convenient and practical). Overall, I was disappointed with this book because I eagerly anticipated being able to play more songs than the ones I had learned in the course book and really wanted to practice before moving farther along. As an adult, it's hard to find books with easy songs that aren't kids songs. I've found a few online, but in the meantime I will keep working with this book as I do like a challenge.

I had just started learning piano at a late age, with no piano nor musical background whatsoever and the Alfred books make it learning almost effortless. This book is harder than the level 1 adult course book I'm at but I enjoy learning piece #1, Love Me Tender.

Mistborn es precioso, pero esa edición en español es horrible. Yo por eso los tengo en inglés. Igual la traducción de algunos términos al español le quita vida a la narración. Lord Ruler = Lord Legislador, con esa traducción parece que es un burócrata en vez de un villano todopoderoso, y Mistborn= Nacidos de la Bruma también le quita realismo a la narración, porque Mistborn es un termino fácil de usar y de decir y suena realista, algo que las personas diríamos si la Allomancia existiera, pero Nacidos de la Bruma, son cuatro palabras, no es un termino fácil de utilizar y no es creíble. así que si pueden, léanlo en inglés.

Excelente novela de fantasía

¿Qué hubiera pasado si Harry Potter se hubiera aliado con Voldemort? ¿Qué hubiera pasado si Frodo no hubiera destruido el Anillo Único y Sauron hubiera vuelto en su máximo esplendor? En resumen, ¿qué hubiera pasado si el héroe profetizado hubiera fallado?
Es con este disparador que inicia El Imperio Final, el primer libro de la trilogía de Nacidos en la Bruma.
La novela nos presenta un mundo donde el Héroe de las Eras, el héroe profetizado que destruiría a la «Profundidad» y restauraría el mundo a su antiguo esplendor, ha fallado. Desde entonces, el mundo se ha sumido en oscuridad. Y es aquí donde el autor muestra una de sus grandes destrezas: la construcción del mundo donde transcurre la acción. Con unas breves pinceladas, Sanderson logra crear un mundo sin esperanzas, devastado por la ceniza, las brumas y un gobierno tiránico, que no se siente para nada disparatado.
Asimismo, el autor es igual de meticuloso al establecer un sistema de magia. Si bien la misma no es referida como tal, ciertos personajes en la novela cuentan con distintos poderes alománticos; es decir que, «quemando» metales dentro de su cuerpo, pueden adquirir ciertas habilidades, como «empujar» o «tirar» de metales, mayor fuerza, y más. A diferencia de otras novelas de fantasía, donde los poderes y la magia son solo conceptos vagos que se tuercen a la voluntad y necesidades de los protagonistas y la narración, aquí siguen reglas claras y uno siente que todo tiene una explicación que nunca carece de sentido dentro de la lógica propia del relato.
Por otro lado, con la misma habilidad con la que Sanderson presenta su mundo y su sistema de magia, la novela está dotada de una trama apasionante, llena de giros argumentales que nunca desentonan con la narración ni parecen forzados, y como si fuera poco, con personajes de los cuales uno no puede evitar encariñarse. Pese a que cuenta con algunos personajes moralmente grises, como Kelsier, en su mayoría, se tratan de personajes más afines a la fantasía clásica, pero no por eso son menos complejos.
El Imperio Final presenta una prosa sencilla y llana, y beneficia más a la historia y el dialogo, en pos de crear un ritmo despiadado y que uno no pueda soltar el libro. Aun así, durante las escenas de acción —que abundan—, puede volverse irritante tener que leer una y otra vez las descripciones de cómo se «quema» cierto metal y tal otro para lograr tal y cual efecto.
En resumen, el primer libro de Nacidos en la Bruma tiene todo lo que se puede pedir del género: grandes personajes, un mundo excelentemente construido, un sistema mágico increíblemente original, y giros argumentales deslumbrantes. Si están buscando una buena novela de fantasía, esta es una que sin dudas no pueden dejar pasar.

Debo reconocer que el autor te tira de golpe y desde el principio todo, como si conocieras su mundo, como si lo que te plantea no fuera un mundo nuevo y sorprendente. Me ha costado un poco sumergirme en la holomancia, en los inquisidores, en el Imperio Final, pero una vez que lo hice me parecían tan natural cosas como"quemar peltre" ó "tirar del acero" que cuando se relataban las peleas hasta podía imaginarlas en mi cabeza como si fueran una película de acción.
Una trama compleja pero bien planteada, un final que te deja con ganas de más pero que no decepciona para nada. Una novela larga pero para nada aburrida, con personajes bien pensados y que actúan en la justa medida para dar balance y sentido a cada acción que se va desenvolviendo. Giros y sorpresas que encantan al lector (al menos a mi me han encantado jajajaja) En fin, un libro de fantasía estupendo, donde la imaginación del autor está ampliamente explotada y no agotada.
El primer libro que leo de Brandon Sanderson pero no el último sin duda.

Along with teaching duties she chartered the National Honor Society participation of the vocational school and was advisor for the VICA opening and closing ceremony team to National competition representing the state of Ohio. Mrs. Dofka has retired from active teaching but maintains life membership in the Iota Lambda Sigma, professional vocational teaching fraternity, DANB dental assisting certification, and maintains retired status as dental hygienist in West Virginia. She is currently serving in consultation practice and advisory board capacity as well as volunteer activities.

AMAZING BOOK! Easily and correctly explains everything to you. I mean EVERYTHING. This is a must purchase if your in ANY type of dental school or class. I don't know how I'd pass anything with out this book. 1000% worth the money.

Jeffrey H. Kingston is a senior lecturer in the Basser Department of Computer Science at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has published correctness proofs and analyses of a variety of data structures ans algorithms; his other research interests include document formatting, computerized timetable construction and computer science curriculum design.

If you are a computer science student or advance programmer, you should get this book. The diagrams and descriptions in the book give you insights of the advance programming which would help you. However you may get confused because the examples in the book is using the programming language Eiffel. You would like this book if and only if you like hard coding.
