About the Author
John L.B. Walker is RF division manager for Semelab plc, Lutterworth, England. He holds a B.Sc. in electrical engineering, an M.Sc. in microwaves and communications, and a Ph.D. in microwave directional filters, all from Leeds University.
Daniel Myer is president of Communication Power Corporation in Hauppauge, New York, and has 24 years of experience in the design and manufacture of broadband RF/microwave power amplifiers. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University, New York and an A.A.S. in electrical engineering technology from SUNY Farmingdale.
Chris Task is a designer of analog, RF, and microwave circuitry for Sonoran Radio Research, Tempe, Arizona. He has over 25 years of experience in the field and holds an M.S. in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

A filing cabinet condensed into a book

This book is a must-have if you are designing HF magnetics, highly useful if you are seriously applying them, and still useful but probably not needed if you are just buying parts and plunking them on a PCB. This book is a collection of papers from the classic to the recent. The oldest was published in 1944, some are from the 1950s through 70s, but most were published in the last 20 years or so, when the rise of computer based modeling began to fuel innovation in the field. Because so much of this literature is scattered through various journals, magazines, and conference records, the fact that someone with a good eye for what is relevant has done the work to collect it all into a single volume is a great service. The fact that the articles range from classic windings-on-a-core transformers to baluns to microstrip give the book a breadth and continuity that enhances the value of the collection. However, many of the papers are highly theoretical. For the most part, this is not a how-to cookbook of readily adaptable designs. Some of the papers are trade magazine articles that emphasize practical results, and there are some manufacturer application notes, such as the inclusion of Motorola (Freescale) AN-758 "A Two Stage 1kW Solid State Linear Amplifier" that can as easily be pulled off the web. You also have such gems as the original papers by Wilkinson, Ruthroff, Guanella, and Marchand on the popular devices called by their names. Altogether, if you want something that you can pull off your shelf to learn at least something about almost any aspect of combiners, couplers, and transformers from HF through microwaves, this book will meet the need almost every time. If you are writing any sort of academic paper in this area, here you have a bibliography in a book. Highly recommended -- if you're sufficiently deep into these types of devices.

This is a collection of reprints of famous magazine and journal articles about passive devices used in RF designs that are hard to find. It is arranged in sections with a summary preceding the reprints.
The classic papers vary in clearness. The ones from trade magazines are short on theory but very practical for designers. The ones from scientific journals are very compactly written and may be hard to follow by some engineers.
