Great book!

One of the best introductory book on cognitive linguistics. The two chapters on proto typetheory are lucid and insightful and include critical reflexions on figures like Lakoff, Sweetser, and Langacker (cognitive grammar). The two chapters on phonetics and phonology (chapter 10: Polysemous Categories in Intonation and chapter 13: Prototype Categories in Phonology), however, may prove to be somewhat diffucult for the 'newcomer' linguist in light of these chapters technical quality.
Still, Taylor's book is a "must read" for anyone interested in cognitive linguistics.

About the Author
Julia Cook is a former teacher and school counselor with a master's degree in Elementary School Counseling. She strives to help children explore their untapped potential by actively engaging them in creative stories that not only entertain, but inspire children to change for the better. Her fun, child-friendly stories are inspired by years of working with children and carefully listening to parents and teachers. She lives in Fremont, Nebraska with her husband and three children.

This book has been great for my 5 year old

This book has been great for my 5 year old. We've owned it for about 6 months now. We read it pretty frequently at first, and coupled it with discussions about interrupting. The illustrations and concepts in the book were familiar for my son-- one setting is an elementary classroom, and he was in kindergarten when we got the book, so it made an impact. Now, usually all we have to do is give a gentle reminder that he just interrupted us, and my son will apologize and sit tight until it's his turn to talk.

It really helped him see how bad it was to speak out

My son has adhd, and loves this book! Her books explain things perfectly for kids to understand and absorb what's being said. It really helped him see how bad it was to speak out, but it's something others do too and he can change that. It has also helped me to make correcting his outbursts more fun and less being scolded by mom again, by saying I hear a volcano erupting. It works! A lot better than shushing. I definitely recommend this for any parent struggling with their child constantly interrupting.

Volcano mouth

It was a cute way to point out to small children about the importance of holding their tongue. I didn't however like the way it shifts blame on their mouth. I feel like it could have taught them how to take more responsibility of their actions instead of putting fault on the "volcano"

About the Author

Al Arens, founding author of this textbook, was the PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Accounting Emeritus at Michigan State University. In addition to writing books on auditing, he was a coauthor of computerized accounting supplements and he was actively involved in the continuing education of practitioners with local and regional CPA firms. Al was a past president of the American Accounting Association and a former member of the AICPA Auditing Standards Board. He practiced public accounting with both a local CPA firm and the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young. He received many awards including the AAA Auditing Section Outstanding Educator award, the AICPA Outstanding Educator award, the national Beta Alpha Psi Professor of the Year award, and many teaching and other awards at Michigan State.

 

Randy Elder, who has served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is Professor of Accounting at Syracuse University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards. His research focuses on audit quality and current audit firm practices and he served as the team leader for American Accounting Association Auditing Section PCAOB research synthesis teams on audit confirmations and audit sampling. He has extensive public accounting experience with a large regional CPA firm, frequently teaches continuing education for a large international CPA firm, and is a member of the AICPA and Michigan Association of CPAs.

 

Mark S. Beasley, who has also served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is the Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and Professor of Accounting at North Carolina State University. He has taught undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards including membership in NC State’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He has extensive professional audit experience with the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young and has extensive standards-setting experience working with the Auditing Standards Board as a Technical Manager in the Audit and Assurance Division of the AICPA. He served on the ASB Fraud Standard Task Force responsible for developing SAS 99, the ASB Antifraud Programs and Controls Task Force, and the Advisory Council overseeing the COSO Enterprise Risk Management Framework project. He recently completed over seven years of service as a member of the COSO Board, representing the AAA.

 

Chris Hogan is a Professor of Accounting in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. We are thrilled to continue the Michigan State connection started by Al Arens. Chris teaches a graduate auditing course and her research focuses on internal controls and integrated audits, audit firm client portfolios, and the impact of regulation on audit markets. Chris has auditing experience with Price Waterhouse, one of the predecessor firms to PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. She has served in multiple leadership roles within the American Accounting Association, including serving as President of the Auditing Section and on the Audit Committee of the AAA.

I have been an auditor for the last seven years and I can assure you that Prof. Arens book is excellent. Even if you have a working experience with audits you will find that this book is not the usual "text book"

The Global paperback is almost like the hardback.

I got the global paperback version with the birds on it. It is mostly like US hardback edition except the questions in the back of the chapter is different. What I do is borrow a friends book, scan the questions with my phone, and then I'm all good to go with homework. If you can do that you'll save some money.

I am just starting to use the text but it is an extremely easy read while being quite informative.

The end-of-chapter summary along a varied selection of questions from review type multiple choice to the thought provoking variety ensures that the material gets to sink in.

He and Kalana use Tibby’s Mirage Fighter, the ALI to join up with the NEW ORLEANS at Plosaxen. Before they arrive, the Brotherhood, on the HAPRIN, is joined by their ally a Tottalax warship. When Tibby and Kalana arrive, the cloaked NEW ORLEANS is taking heavy fire acting as an invisible shield. Tibby and Kalana are forced to remain cloaked themselves while they wait for the battle to wane so they can board the NEW ORLEANS, however, before they can do so the Tottalax unleashes their sleep weapon in an attempt to disable the NEW ORLEANS crew. Tibby and Kalana are rendered unconscious aboard the ALI as ship continues on its flight path after colliding with the Tottalax. Tibby awakens to alarms going off and the ALI is about to crash into a planet. He discovers his ship has apparently been damaged by an impact with the HAPRIN after he and Kalana lost consciousness. Tibby is barely able to make an emergency landing on the remote desert planet aptly named Desolation when Kalana awakens and announces she is going into labor. Tibby must help Kalana deliver the twins; the ALI is unable to take off or fly again, and nearest help is two light-years away Tibby activates an emergency signal for assistance and rescue, knowing it may be years, if ever, that it will be detected and help arrives.
Tibby has no way of knowing what is happening with the war against the Brotherhood. He knows he needs to get back and take command of the 1st fleet but for now he must focus on caring for Kalana and the twins in a hostile environment, with strange nocturnal creatures on a planet that seems dead by day but comes to life after the sun sets. As time progresses, Tibby must deal with the nagging thought of who will hear his emergency message and arrive first, his friends to rescue him, or the Brotherhood that seeks to kill him.

I have been an avid reader of science fiction for over 50 years and in all that time, I have only seen a hand full of science fiction books that incorporate families in the story. In the Solbidyum Wars Saga, starting with book 5, I try a new approach by bringing children into the saga as Tibby and Kalana have twins.  Throughout this book and the rest of the saga, you will get to read about these children growing as seen through the eyes of their father.  Like most fathers, especially those in the military, getting to spend time with one's children is never often enough, but yet bonds are developed, and interactions take place.  I am hoping that by bringing these children into the story it will add an element that will make the stories more realistic, even though they are fiction. I am hoping you will find this addition to the stories interesting and fun, and for those readers who are parents, I hope you can find elements that you can relate to with your own memories of raising your children.  For the rest of you, be assured there still will be plenty of action and intrigue as the war continues to grow, and Tibby leads the battle against the evil Brotherhood.

About the Author
Dale Musser was born in 1944 in a small rural community of Pennsylvania.  From 1967 until 2012 he was employed as a structural and piping designer in the industries of marine and offshore resources, cogeneration power and hard rock mining.  His work at three shipyards and assignments with several engineering and naval architectural firms during his careers in Virginia, Texas, and Maine, took him to such places as London, U.K., Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., Scotland and Mexico.  During this time, he was responsible for the design of reactor compartments for nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and the structural designs of numerous offshore semi-submersible oil rigs, tanker ships, supply boats, and other vessels and equipment used in the offshore industry.  After the death of his wife in 1999, Mr. Musser changed careers and went to work in Arizona and Utah in the hard rock mining industry.  He retired in the Fall of 2012 and currently resides in Mesa, Arizona.
Dale enjoys rock hunting and lapidary work, gourmet cooking, writing, poetry, art, music, religions and philosophy in small doses, astronomy and the sciences in general, hiking, camping, the outdoors and the gifts that nature provides.  Mr. Musser is a member of Mensa and remains an avid reader, having lost count of all the books he has read after 3,000.
The greatest joy in his life is his daughter, Heather.  Affectionately they call each other "BUBBY."

buckle up and enjoy the ride

Dale-Dale-Dale - brilliantly written, technically-dramatically-comically - I am upset though, as I couldn't put the book down and now have to wait for book 6. All the while, hoping there will be 60 books - the story line you've created is one like I've never experienced before. the depth of characters is phenomenal and your insight to their technology blows me away, this progression seems believable and real. It's also easy to connect with every character, their personalities and emotions bring your books to life. now, I must tell you, I've changed my mind. I've hoped since book one, that your vision makes it to the big screen... A two hour movie, even with sequels will do your books no justice. I'm hoping that one day, everyone will enjoy your stories on the sci-fi channel in a weekly series, that would last several seasons. I eagerly await book 6. Again, great job and thank you for taking my mind on a trip through the Galaxy and beyond.

Book is good, but you will still have to have better ...

Book is good, but you will still have to have better than average knowledge to utilize it. Still reads like the extended version of your owners manual so don't expect a ton of pictures and service warnings like the full online (subscription) mechanics references have. Wish it would detail out error codes and what probable causes and secondary cautions should be (with reference pictures).

For general maintenance this is ok. But if you aren't familiar with cars or your particular model, I'd look online for references instead.

It is hard cover and easy to read print

Bought this recently to help replacing down pipes on 335xi BMW, and subsequent repairs to cooling system- Radiator, intercooler, ATF cooler. Also used for oil change info.

Using this manual does not provide you with 100% of the info you need but has alot of technical info such as torque specs and schematics. The pictures are sometimes hard to correlate with actual car but with careful studying are understandable.

It is hard cover and easy to read print. I would buy it again.

One note however, is that it directs you to a website for updates to the info in the manual, but the update website charges a fee for use. I don't think it was this way in the past.

Good manual for the hands-on BMW guy/gal.

Awesome book. Hopefully I don't need to use it too often on my N55 Engine but I'm confident in doing typical maintenance more now that I have this manual.
It does have several print errors in it but they're not major. Such as a section for a N55 repair having pictures of N54 engine like the previous section had.
It's good read starting from the beginning for any BMW aficionado to learn the progress in 3-series engines and how things work in their German cars. I certainly enjoyed reading the technical stuff as an Engineer but also as an aficionado.

Help for the Confessing

Although written to help priests be more effective and gentle, helpful confessors by gaining a deeper understanding of what their people are saying (or trying to say or hide )in confession this book can also help laity confused about the sacramment of reconciliation. It can show you clearer and more precise ways to express yourself, or how to ask your confessor for the kind of guidance this St. Meinrad's professor would have him offer. Confession is difficult for priests, Father Stasiak points out, because it is the only sacrament they can not watch others priests administer.

Good basic training

The Sacrament of Reconciliation seems to be one of the less-attended to in seminary training. Rites of Initiation and Eucharist receive much more attention, which is rightly deserved. A Confessor's Handbook provides good training and assistance for seminarians wishing to learn more about this sacrament, as well as to continuing clergy looking to become better confessors.

The general approach can be summed up as, "Why is this person here?" "From what are they seeking to be freed?" The methodology is valid, as it addresses the pastoral needs of the situation; it is helpful, as it immediately cuts through the nice, but irrelevant conversations; and it's is simple, which makes is easy to implement and follow.

Also included in the back is a helpful bibliography of other books on the subject, for those who wish to do further reading.

Confessors Handbook

Every seminarian and Priest should read and digest this wonderful work. It offers insights and suggestions for more meaningful administration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation [Penance] in a condensed, well-written format.

Often, Catholics avoid Confession out of fear. How sad this is, for it is in this Sacrament that the Mercy of God is so clearly manifested. Christ empowered His Priests to forgive sins in His Name. What an awesome responsibility. What an awesome Sacrament. It doesn't matter what one has done for the Divine Mercy of Our Lord is there ready to clear the soul of all that is sinful. Like an ocean of mercy, our sins drop into a sea from which they cannot be found any longer. Our sins may be numerous but if we are faithful to confess them all with true contrition and a firm purpose of amendment [a resolve not to commit them again], God is faithful to forgive them.

Now is the time for Mercy before Christ comes as the Just Judge. Now is the time before it is too late. If you know a Priest or seminarian, get him a copy of this book. It may be one of the best gifts he has ever received and you yourself one day hopefully can reap the benefits of this wonderful Sacrament. Don't put it off.
