A new standard reference for F1
By James Pernikoff
For years my standard reference for Grand Prix races has been Trevor Griffith's "Grand Prix", but that book has not been updated since 1998. Roger Smith's new book won't fully replace Griffith's, but will occupy a place on the same shelf.
Each year is covered by 6 to 12 pages, depending on the number of races. The first page for each year includes "The Tale of the Title", a summary of the season in one-line sentences, and "The Chase for the Championship", a graph which shows the relative positions of the top two or three drivers throughout the season. The races themselves are covered, generally three to a page, with a header providing location, date, and winner, a paragraph summarizing the race, a list of the top six finishers with their car type, and a statistical table giving info like the pole winner, the race distance, number of starters & finishers, weather, lap leaders, fastest lap, and the championship standings after that race. The author highlights those races which he puts in his "Top 100" among all of the 858 races listed.
Some pages only have two race summaries, because the other space is occupied by one of Alain Baudouin's color drawings showing all of the race-winning cars. At the end of each year's race summaries is "Facts and Folklore" giving more insight as to the results of the season, and statistical tables listing every driver and constructor that earned points during the season. There are also a couple of good color photos, but one thing this is definitely not is a photo book; there are plenty of others available.
At the back of the book are three appendices. Appendix 1 will be particularly useful, as it lists all of the many non-championship F1 races that took place from 1946 through 1983, listing: event, circuit, winner, car, time and speed. For the years 1947 to 1949, events that would have had world championship status (if that championship had existed yet) are highlighted in bold type.
Appendix 2 lists all of the championship race winners by descending order of wins, followed by similar lists for constructors and engines. Appendix 3 lists all of the champions by year. Lastly is a fairly complete bibliography.
The only criticisms I can level at the book have to do with the lists of top finishers for each event. Listing only the top 6 is understandable; otherwise the book would be enormous, but for complete results I'll still have to consult my other sources. (I think that at the very least, all points-winning drivers should have been listed, which would mean 10 for the most recent races.) Also, I wish that the models of the winning cars had been listed, not just the makes.
But those are relatively minor quibbles. This work is really a tour de force and I think all serious fans of F1 racing should have a copy on their shelf.

A must have for any true F1 fan
By David J. Martin
This book is phenomenal. It is packed with so much detailed information. It is the only way to truly relive all the moments in F1 history. It doesn't exaggerate when it says "All the Races," it genuinely explains what all happened in each and EVERY race since the beginning. Worth every penny.

I've been an F1 fan for over 50 years, despite what they've done to the series. It is fun to look at the races I've attended and remind myself of what happened. Great reference book.
